London Biotechnology Network

LBN was established in June 2000, providing the first co-ordinated approach to biotechnology in London. With over 2000 members, LBN is now one of the largest biotechnology networks in Europe.

BioGuide London

The London BioGuide

London is a prime business location for life science companies. However, with the plethora of information, contacts and services available, navigating the sector itself can prove to be a major challenge. BioGuide London has been developed to streamline this process by providing a first point of contact for all enquiries relating to the biopharmaceutical sector. The BioGuide London directory is a comprehensive mapping of all the players in the industry - the biotech and pharma companies, clinical trials units, research centres of excellence, technology transfer offices, facilities providers, sources of grants and finance, legal and accounting services, consultants, regulatory agencies and government and trade bodies. You should be able to find the information you need by following the appropriate tabs or headings or by clicking on the various links throughout the website. Alternatively, you may use the search engine provided on the top-right-hand corner of each web page.

This BioGuide directory is a tool that we hope users will find useful. We will endeavour to update the information herein on a monthly basis. Should you need more tailored information or further assistance, you may contact the London Biotechnology Network’s Bioscience Key Account Managers by emailing tjones@london-first.co.uk or calling +44 (0)20 7665 1403.

Genesis Conference

9-10th December 2008, Queen Elizabeth II Conference Centre and BERR Conference Centre, Westminster, London, UK
The largest biotechnology conference built around networking is back! Now in its eighth year, we have once again introduced some changes to facilitate your gaining maximal benefit out of attending whilst keeping the costs at a level that enables everyone from Academia, Industry, Government, entrepreneurs and the investment community to attend.
What’s New at Genesis 2008?

  • Bioversity – the conference launched last year to showcase university technologies to the Bio-Pharma industry has agreed to move into Genesis.
  • UK Trade & Investment have moved their annual BioTECHNOLOGY Business Exchange meeting, which routinely attracts inward trade missions from over 10 countries, to now coincide with Genesis. We are delighted UK Trade & Investment have identified Genesis as such a pivotal event in the biotech calendar.
  • To facilitate delegate networking and partnering efficiently, we will this year be using the Eventscope software for both days (Dec 9th and Dec 10th). This approach allows all delegates to get in contact and decide whether they wish to meet, but without disclosing any personal contact details.
  • A re-designed event layout will create a more dynamic exhibition and networking area with a central cafe area with non-stop refreshments, meeting points and tables for those ad hoc discussions.
  • An enriched conference program with the Keynote Stream structured by territory (UK/Europe, North America and Asia) and Bioversity Stream showcasing university-generated opportunities and an Alternative BiotechStream showcasing the latest developments in those areas of the biotech sector that compliment new medicine discovery, such as natural products, bio-manufacturing and blue bio.
  • The Society for Medicines Research will be joining us for the December meeting and we have a link up with SCRIP who will be running the annual Awards Dinner on the evening of Dec 10th.
  • Greater flexibility to ‘pay as you go’ in terms of booking only what you wish to attend, selecting full conference, exhibitor only, poster exhibitor or networking only pass (subject to availability). For a quick guide to what each package booked entitles you to request a quick guide from genesisconference@londonfirst.co.uk This email address is being protected from spam bots, you need Javascript enabled to view it now

We look forward to welcoming you to Genesis 2008 in December. Please see the following pages for the latest information on the programme, exhibition bookings, sponsorship packages and delegate registration.

LBN Career Track

Addressing London’s Assets and Hurdles in Life Science Sector Development

London trains some 39,000 life science and healthcare-related graduates and PhDs each year. Far exceeding the North West region, its closest comparable. This provides a very exciting opportunity for London’s companies, researchers, HEIs and other stakeholders if they wish to grasp the opportunity.

Leveraging the successful track record of the London Biotechnology Network (www.londonbiotechnology.co.uk) , Career Track will undertake a range of activities to address:

·         Skills gaps seen by London’s life science companies when recruiting staff at all levels

·         Hurdles faced by London’s life scientists when seeking employment in the life science sector, whether as scientists, in roles away from the laboratory bench and those bio-entrepreneurs wishing to start their own companies.

·         Business creation through ensuring London’s bio-entrepreneurs are well connected to the research, investment, professional services and management pools London now has to offer in this sector.

·         The Academia-Industry interface will be enhanced through London’s emerging career academics acquiring a better understanding of the issues their potential industrial partners/sponsors face. A properly networked London life science cluster in the proposed here will lead to an increase in the quantity and quality of later interactions at this interface.

·         Diversity of London’s life science sector will be targeted through specific goals of engagement with those communities under-represented currently.

Activities of LBN Career Track

The above goals will be achieved through a combination of the following activities that will be delivered by LBN:

·         Bio-Business Taster Evenings: Run very much on the model of current Bio-Wednesdays but selecting topics and targeted promotional strategies that provide young scientists and entrepreneurs with the opportunity to acquire the wider skills often deemed as lacking by employers

·         Mentoring: rather than recruit researchers onto full training courses, although some may wish to pursue these after an introduction to the sector, LBN Career Track will link those commencing their career paths with industry and academic leaders in their sphere of interest. The target would be that the pair will meet, perhaps over lunch/dinner, a minimum 4 times a year to discuss what additional skills the younger professional should acquire, who else the mentor could introduce them to and general discuss career paths and options

·         Employment Exchange: The opportunity for member employers and potential employees to be brought together through exhibition and presentation at events and an on-line section of the LBN web site

·         Careers Conference: Together with the key partners, Nature a stand alone conference promoting career choices for life scientists will be developed in London in 2007.

Profile

London is a world-class city with a world-class reputation for excellence in a myriad of areas.

The life science sector is no exception. We invite you to explore the new BioGuide London Directory and discover the breadth and dynamism of research activity, support services and company development that is being undertaken in the city.

LBN’s flagship monthly event, BioWednesday, is one of the best opportunities you will find to hear great seminars on topical information and meet key people in the London biotech sector.

If you want to follow the latest news, events and opportunities in the London life science sector you can sign up for London Life Science News, a regular LBN publication. LBN also promotes members’ latest job opportunities on the website, so make sure to check the jobs page regularly for updates.

The London Biotechnology Network (LBN) began in 2000 and has since grown to be a stalwart addition to the London life sciences community. LBN is a business network of over 800 organisations and 2000 members from the biopharmaceutical sector, academia, venture capital community, legal and accounting services, and consultants with an interest in the sector. LBN strives to provide members with relevant information and networking opportunities to cultivate the right environment for innovation and collaboration in the life sciences community. LBN organises events and co-sponsors, initiatives including:

  1. BioWednesdays: Monthly seminar and networking meetings attracting approximately 200 delegates, each with a theme of relevance to our members.
  2. Investor/Partnering Events: Less frequent but more focused than BioWednesdays and often run in collaboration with international partners to create effective networking forums.
  3. Genesis Conference: Annual international conference that now includes the only UK Biotechnology Company Showcase. The event attracts in excess of 800 delegates and exhibitors from the UK and further, with presentations from industry leaders, exhibition hall, Technology Showcase and online partnering facilities. An excellent opportunity to keep up to date with recent developments in the industry, forge new business relationships and raise awareness of your company to potential partners and investors.
  4. LBN Career Track: Sponsored by the London Development Agency, this delivers regular evening events aimed at increasing awareness of life science career opportunities, mainly for postgraduates and postdoctoral fellows. There is also a 1-2-1-mentoring scheme, recruitment offering and links with The Source careers conference led by Nature Publishing Group.
  5. BioGuide London: The guiding vision of the project is to expand the London biotechnology sector through increased partnerships, investment and efficient access to existing resources and funds. BioGuide London aims to assist new entrants to the London market, as well as existing players, help find the contacts, services, partnering opportunities, facilities and information they need from one main source. This will be done by liaising with UKTI, the tech transfer offices, Think London, LDA and other major stakeholders in industry and government to become a primary contact point for all life science related enquires. For a more comprehensive service, enquiries can also be sent to LBN’s Bioscience Key Account Managers on bioguide@londonfirst.co.uk
