Conditioned Place Preference (CPP):- The rewarding or aversive effects of drugs can be examined using this preclinical behavioural test. The task involves the association of an environment with drug treatment. The apparatus has two chambers that are distinguished by unique visual and tactile cues. Drug injections are paired with one of the distinctive chambers. This procedure is repeated for several conditioning trials, in which the animal develops an association between the subjective state produced by the drug and the distinctive environment. Following the conditioning trails a test session is conducted. The animal is place in the apparatus and CPP is found if the animals spend significantly more time in the drug-paired compartment versus the vehicle-paired compartment. Drugs of abuse, such as cocaine, produce CPP. The CPP paradigm generally provides a reliable indicator for studying the rewarding effects of drugs that require relatively little training compared to self-administration paradigm.
