NORT: - Rodents tend to interact more with a novel object than with a familiar object. A trait exploited the object-recognition task. Subjects are placed in an area and allowed to explore an object. Following this exploration the subject is returned to its home cage for a given interval. The subject is then returned to the apparatus, now containing the previously encountered familiar object and a novel object. Object recognition is distinguished by more time spent interacting with the novel object. This method has been used to study cognition in response to various genetic, pharmacological and environmental manipulations.
