Release issued 17th July 2001
The Centre for Applied Microbiology & Research (CAMR) is pleased to announce that it has fulfilled an order to supply anthrax vaccine to the UK Ministry of Defence.
This announcement is the culmination of over two years intensive work by staff at the Centre, which has seen the vaccine production unit rebuilt and refurbished at a cost of several million pounds. The result is a state of the art which meets all the requirements of a modern pharmaceutical plant.
The facility is currently the only one anywhere in the world which is able to manufacture a licensed vaccine against anthrax.
The strategic importance of the vaccine to the UK was highlighted during the gulf conflict when it was feared that Iraq would use biological weapons against Allied forces.
CAMR will continue to produce the vaccine in the future to ensure that the UK retains the capability to protect its armed forces from the threat of this element of biological warfare. CAMR will also continue to supply the vaccine to meet public health requirements.
CAMR is a Special Health Authority responsible to the UK Department of Health. CAMR is a distinct organisation from the Chemical and Biological Defence sector of DSTL Porton Down which is responsible to the Ministry of Defence.
