Release issued 6th April 2001
Amarin Technologies S.A. has developed an innovative transdermal delivery system (TDS) containing diclofenac diethylamine for the treatment of musculoskeletal and inflammatory conditions.
The product is a thin, transparent and flexible drug-in-matrix device designed to release diclofenac into the bloodstream in order to reach low but constant plasma diclofenac concentrations during 24 hs. after patch application. It was launched in Argentina as OXA SAT® by a licensee company named Laboratorios Beta SA.
Plasma diclofenac concentrations obtained with this innovative transdermal delivery system are much lower but much steadier than those provided by other systemic ways of administration (e.g. oral, intravenous or intramuscular). A clinical study performed on patients suffering from knee osteoartritis indicated that the diclofenac patch designed by Amarin has an efficacy similar to that of diclofenac tablets (50 mg x 3), according to the clinical parameters evaluated such as pain on rest, pain on movement and pain on pressure.
Amarin's Diclofenac TDS has shown a very good adhesion to the skin and an excellent local and systemic tolerance. Contact with water does not affect the device. The product may be applied in different body areas such as arms, abdomen or buttocks. It is still available for license in certain territories.
Amarin Technologies SA is an Argentinean company engaged in the development and licensing of transdermal and gel products under its proprietary technology. It is part of the Amarin Corporation plc group of companies (Nasdaq: AMRN)
