Ethical Pharmaceuticals South America announces that a combination patch for continuous treatment of the menopausal symptoms was launched in Argentina by its licensee.
Because unopposed estrogens stimulate the endometrium with the subsequent risk of hyperplasia, the addition of a progestin such as norethindrone in a sequential or continuous way is a rational way of protecting the endometrium.
The product is indicated for the treatment of moderate to severe symptoms, and vulvar and vaginal atrophy associated with the menopausal syndrome. Estrogens are also useful for the prevention of osteoporosis and the reduction of the risk of ischemic heart disease associated with the post-menopause.
Continuous treatment with estradiol/norethindrone reduces some inconveniences associated with the sequential estrogen-progestin therapy (e.g. cyclic bleeding), thus, increasing patient compliance.
The transdermal delivery system containing estradiol and norethisterone was launched in two presentations: a high dose of 50/250 mcg/day and a lower dose of 25/125 mcg/day.
The products complete Ethical's wide range of Transdermal Delivery Systems in Hormone Replacement Therapy where the company already has a 7-day Estradiol TDS commercialized by Wyeth Ayerst in Latin America as Climaderm® and Laboratorios Beta S.A. in Argentina. A 7-day cyclic combination TDS treatment and a gel containing Estradiol are also available in the Argentinean market.
The company said that the HRT segment will be fully covered with the completion of the combination gel containing estradiol and a progestagen which is under development (Preclinical).
The products are still available for license in certain territories.
