Allergan & CAMR announce licence & research collaboration agreement

Release issued 15th May 2000

(SALISBURY, United Kingdom & IRVINE, California - May 15, 2000) --The Centre for Applied Microbiology & Research (CAMR) and Allergan (New York Stock Exchange: AGN) today announced they have entered into a license agreement and a multi-year research collaboration to accelerate the commercial availability of CAMR's novel neurotoxin-based technology that targets the treatment of acute and chronic pain conditions. This agreement addresses research and development, clinical trials and commercialization of resultant products.

Allergan has agreed to fund a joint research program with CAMR to generate a series of compounds that address the therapeutic areas of acute and chronic pain and may be advanced to clinical trials. Should this research effort be successful, the collaboration will extend to development and manufacture of the resultant products. Under the terms of the agreement, CAMR could receive up to 20 million Pounds Sterling in the form of research fees, technology fees and milestone payments. In addition, CAMR will be entitled to future royalties on world wide net sales of any products that result from the related research and development process. Allergan will have exclusive rights to commercialize the technology.

CAMR's patented technology has emerged from its research into the neurotoxins produced by Clostridium botulinum. By removing the binding portion of the neurotoxin, which targets motor-nerve fibres, and attaching ligands which target peripheral nerves responsible for transmitting pain signals (C- fibres), CAMR has developed a new treatment that has few, if any, of the side effects of the opiate products now used to treat pain. Initial laboratory studies have shown that this new class of analgesic product has a long-term effect of pain cessation without muscle weakness.

"Because of their strategic commitment to seeking new therapeutic products from microbial toxin, we saw Allergan as a natural partner for this work," said Dr. Roger Gilmour, Chief Executive Officer of CAMR. "We are very excited about the long-term potential of both the technology and the collaboration."

"We are very pleased to be entering in to a formal relationship with CAMR and look forward to the success of the research collaboration," said Dr. Les Kaplan, President, Research and Development at Allergan. "The scientists and technology of CAMR are in the forefront of clostridial neurotoxin research and are a logical fit with our existing BOTOX® research and development program," continued Dr. Kaplan. "This transaction is representative of Allergan's substantial long- term commitment to maintaining a leadership position in the area of therapeutic neurotoxins."

CAMR is a Special Health Authority, governed by the UK Department of Health through the Microbiological Research Authority Board.

Allergan, headquartered in Irvine, California, is a technology- driven, global health care company providing eye care and specialty pharmaceutical products worldwide.
