Patent for non-antibiotic preparation to prvent and treat staphylococcal infections granted by the German Patent Office

Release issued 11th September 2009

Immunology Laboratories, Inc. (ImmLab) was recently granted a patent by the German Patent Office for Compositions and Methods for Treatment of Microbial Infections, adding to its patent protection for its intellectual property. ImmLab's novel technological inventions are for the prevention and treatment of staphylococcal infections, especially Staphylococcus Aureus (S. aureus), in humans and animals.

Immlab's preparation is a staphylococcal lysate (SL) which is prepared by lysis of selected S. aureus strains (on deposit at the Czech Collection of Microorganisms) with selected polyvalent bacteriophages (on deposit at the Deutsche Sammlung von Mikroorganismen und Zellkulturen GmbH). ImmLab's SL contains biologically active components derived from S. aureus. The components activate both innate and acquired immunity, including humoral and cell-mediated responses. The phages are produced by bacterial strains that have stable reproduction and do not produce a toxin. Furthermore, the selected bacteria are stable hosts for the phages. ImmLab's scientists found that long-term application of SL activates the host's immune responses and leads, in a high percentage of patients with chronic S. aureus infection, to the clearance of the pathogen or at least to a significant improvement. Our hypothesis is that SL induces several innate and adaptive immune responses through multiple mechanisms.

ImmLab's patent protection includes two U.S. patents granted, a Hong Kong patent granted and issued, a Japanese Patent granted, a European patent granted and a German patent granted. Individual European country applications are in process in the Czech Republic, Slovakia, France and the United Kingdom. Applications are also in process in Canada and South Korea as well as two U.S applications.

ImmLab is a small, closely-held biotec firm incorporated in the state of Alabama, USA in 1998. ImmLab is interested in creating a partnering relationship, and is especially interested in a merger or acquisition.
