Release issued 6th May 2008
Barcelona, Spain, May 6, 2008 - Palau Pharma, S.A. ("Palau"), the biopharmaceutical company focused on the discovery and development of novel products for the treatment of inflammatory and autoimmune diseases, today announces that its partner, Iberhospitex S.A. ("IHT"), has received marketing approval from the Spanish Agency for Medicines and Medical devices for its ACTIVE® coronary stent. In addition, the product has been awarded CE Marking from the European Union.
In recent years Palau has been collaborating with IHT in the development of several novel drug-eluting stents. The first approved product from this partnership is the ACTIVE® stent. IHT will market ACTIVE® in selected world markets. Under the terms of the agreement between the two companies, Palau will receive royalties from sales of the stent. IHT will market the ACTIVE® stent to several European countries, including Spain, France, Italy and Portugal and expects to make the stent available immediately. According to data published in Scrip Magazine in January 2006, the market for drug-eluting stents in the EU is estimated to be worth approximately €600 million.
The ACTIVE® stent is designed with a proprietary pharmacologically active polymer that contains triflusal and paclitaxel, a microtubule-stabilising drug, and has been shown to prevent the occurrence of restenosis, the repeated narrowing of the artery through scar-tissue-like growth. Triflusal is a well known, potent antiplatelet agent with additional anti-inflammatory and antiproliferative activities discovered by Palau's R&D team and commercialized under the brand name Disgren®.
"We are delighted that these innovative and high quality stents will be available to the European hospital market for the first time. This is an important milestone for Palau, as the commercialization of ACTIVE® will represent a revenue source that will help us further develop our in house pipeline, focused on inflammatory and autoimmune diseases," commented Ignacio Faus, CEO of Palau.
Luis Duocastella, IHT's Technical Managing Director said, "Bringing together Palau's expertise in anti-inflammatory therapies and IHT's polymer know-how has been key for the development of this new stent, which shows better physical properties than currently available stents and decreases the recurrence of restenosis."
A second drug-eluting stent, the IRIST® simvastatin and triflusal drug-eluting stent was submitted to the Spanish Agency for Medicines and Medical devices for approval and a notification is expected in the second quarter of 2008.
