Release issued 24th April 2008
Melsungen, Germany,- B. Braun, a global leader in innovative healthcare products that reduce medication errors and increase patient safety, announced today the availability of its new Exadoral® oral dispenser portfolio. Developed by the OEM division of B. Braun for the pharmaceutical market, the product line addresses rising concerns over oral medication errors and meets the requirements for safer and more exact measurement of oral medicines.
According to the National Patient Safety Agency (NPSA) 33 patient safety incidents involving intravenous administration of oral liquid medicines with standard syringes occurred between 1 January 2005 and 31 May 2006, and the incorrect intravenous administration of oral medicine resulted in three reported deaths between 2001 and 2004. In its Patient Safety Alert no. 19/2007, the NPSA recommends the usage of labeled oral syringes that cannot be connected to intravenous catheters or ports for dosing and administration of oral liquid medicines.
Concerns also exist regarding other conventional oral liquid medication delivery systems. According to an independent lab study, the dosing of oral antibiotic formulations using the measuring devices (measuring spoons) provided with the product may lead to a lack of dosing accuracy.
“As a company dedicated to patient safety, we realized the importance of completing our range with an oral dispenser portfolio”, said Emmanuel Goujard, Head of Marketing
B. Braun OEM Division Europe and Asia Pacific. “Providing an oral dispenser is an opportunity for pharmaceutical companies to guarantee an exact, safe and easy administration of their oral medicine.”
Exadoral® oral dispenser is an oral syringe with a non luer cone combined with bottle adapter in different sizes. A dispenser set with suction tube and bottle adapter is part of the portfolio.
