Release issued 14th October 2004
Ethypharm adds on its existing line of morphine products
Ethypharm, a pharmaceutical technology company, with focus on development of oral modified release products, announced the marketing approval in Denmark of its once-a- day morphine sulfate, which will soon be followed by a Mutual Recognition Procedure in Europe as from Q1 2005..
The new once-a-day formulation is a capsule that contains sustained release microgranules and allow the once-daily treatment of moderate-to-severe pain in patients who require continuous, around-the-clock opioid therapy for an extended period of time.
"Morphine has a short half-life (2 to 3 hours) when administered orally", said Dr Françoise Vauzelle Kervroëdan, Director of Medical Affairs at Ethypharm. "This means that immediate release formulations must be administered every 4 hours to maintain adequate pain relief. This often results in interrupted sleep and inconvenience for the patient, and the potential for non-compliance or medical errors. This new formulation provides a steady concentration of the drug in the blood, and therefore significantly improves the patient's quality of life, " she added.
Ethypharm provided the market with a real 12 hours morphine sulfate in pellets. It was launched in France in 1992 by UPSA, a Bristol-Myers Company, under the trade name SKENAN® LP. Ethypharm's morphine was also the first twice-a-day formulation based on microgranules to obtain a Marketing Authorisation (M.A.) in Japan in March 2001. This BID formulation was then completed with an immediate- release product - ACTISKENAN® - marketed in France by UPSA.
The approval of the Once-a-day formulation allows Ethypharm to ensure its position as leading provider of products in the treatment of pain with a complete range of morphine products.
The worldwide sustained-release opioid market has grown by an average of 30% annually since 1998. Despite this steady growth, recent studies indicate that as many as 30-85% of select chronic pain patients still are under treated. - END -
