HEALTHPOINT® Launches COOK® Biotech's Oasis® Wound Matrix Disribution in Canada

Release issued 4th September 2002

(Peterborough, Ontario, Canada) — HEALTHPOINT Canada, a division of HEALTHPOINT Ltd., a Texas-based market leader in tissue management, dermatology, and infection prevention products, began marketing COOK Biotech Incorporated's patented wound matrix product, Oasis, in Canada this month through a distribution partnership with Trudell Medical Marketing Limited, a London, Ontario-based supplier of specialty medical products.

Based on COOK's breakthrough Small Intestinal Submucosa, or SIS Technology, Oasis is a natural, extracellular matrix used to manage a variety of wounds by providing an environment that allows the body to heal itself.

HEALTHPOINT Ltd. signed an exclusive, worldwide agreement with COOK Biotech Incorporated earlier this year. The term of the agreement is 20 years, and HEALTHPOINT will have the option to extend the term.

HEALTHPOINT initiated marketing Oasis in the U.S. last spring and is now extending marketing efforts into Canada, Mexico, and Puerto Rico.

Indiana-based COOK Biotech, a leading manufacturer of tissue-engineered biomaterials for numerous medical and surgical applications, will continue to manufacture the product.

Arrangements for HEALTHPOINT's marketing of Oasis in Europe and beyond are also currently in process.

"Oasis has set a new standard for wound management products and offers significant market potential," said H. Paul Dorman, HEALTHPOINT Chairman and CEO. "We are delighted that COOK Biotech has given us the opportunity to market such an innovative product worldwide."

Oasis can be used in the management of partial and full- thickness skin loss injuries, such as pressure, venous and chronic vascular ulcers, diabetic ulcers, surgical and trauma wounds, second degree burns, abrasions, and autograft donor sites.

The SIS Technology, on which Oasis is based, is a new biomaterial that provides a supportive environment to allow a patient's body to rebuild and repair damaged tissue.

SIS is extracted from the submucosal layer of porcine small intestines. The submucosa (found between the mucosal and muscular layers) provides strength to the intestine through a complex organization of structural and functional proteins and molecules that forms a three-dimensional matrix. Extracted in a manner that removes all cells but leaves the complex matrix intact, the result is a naturally derived, extracellular matrix material that combines remarkable strength and flexible handling.

"Oasis has gained widespread recognition as an advanced wound care product for the management of chronic wounds," said Mark Bleyer, COOK Biotech President and CEO. "We are very pleased to have HEALTHPOINT as our exclusive distribution partner in this very important product area. HEALTHPOINT has a strong history of effectively providing advanced technology to meet the needs of wound care professionals and, as such, are excellent partners for our Oasis product."

"Wounds represent a substantial economic burden, especially to our aging society," said John Stone, Manager, Canadian Operations for HEALTHPOINT. "Oasis provides an exciting new option for managing a wide variety of wounds and is an excellent complement to HEALTHPOINT's other tissue management products." Mr. Stone is confident the company's relationship with Trudell, combined with HEALTHPOINT's strong sales and marketing presence in wound care, will advance the product into the hands of Canadian practitioners who serve many patients who can benefit by the technology.
