Release issued 4th April 2002
Zambon and Fournier announce that they have signed a license agreement for the development of new chemical entities from Fournier's know-how and patents on Interleukin- 4 (IL-4) antagonists and Interleukin-4/Interleukin-5 (IL-4/IL-5) secretion inhibitors.
Under the terms of the agreement, Zambon will be responsible for research, development and registration of the products. Antagonists for IL-4 as well as IL-4/IL-5 secretion inhibitors have potential therapeutic application in a number of allergy and respiratory pathology.
Laboratoires Fournier will receive milestone payments, plus royalties on sales. Zambon will have exclusive worldwide marketing rights on the commercialized product.
The agreement adds a new link in the strategic approach taken by the Zambon Group towards acquiring synergies, alliances and partnerships with international companies in order to consolidate its position as a medium-sized, independent pharmaceutical company on world markets.
"This agreement represents recognition of Fournier's discovery capabilities and fits well with its strategy to establish partnerships in therapeutic areas other than its main expertise "says Jean Louis Junien, Fournier's CSO.
"This agreement confirms Zambon's strategy to acquire innovative discovery projects and introduce them in its R&D pipeline at the stage of drug optimization" says Max Fehlmann, Zambon R&D Director.
The molecular optimization of the IL-4 antagonists and IL-4/IL- 5 secretion inhibitors will be performed in the Drug Optimization Institute of Taverne, a new R&D center of Zambon Group in Switzerland dedicated to the production of Lead Compounds and Drug Candidates through combinatorial chemistry and high-throughput screening.
