Novel Enabling Technology: Identification of Genes Encoding Telomere-Associated Proteins
Telomeres are believed to be critical regulators of the genome, and telomere stability important for preventing cancer and ageing. Regulation of telomere length is believed to be controlled by multiple telomere-associated proteins. Using a previously cloned human telomere binding protein, Berkeley Laboratory researchers have developed a method to clone two novel human telomere-associated proteins, TANK-2 and TIN-2. The full-length sequence of one, and a partial sequence of the other are known.
Conclusion
We have successfully developed a method to clone telomere regulations, which have potential therapeutic and diagnostic applications.
Relevance/Opportunity
TANK-2 and TIN-2 may be important telomere regulators, and therefore of interest in the health care arena for the diagnosis or treatment of cancer or age-related diseases.
