The devices generally used to immobilize the head of a patient in techniques such as computerized tomography consist of a frame on which a thermoplastic mask that adapts to the patient's head is fixed. However, such immobilization devices used in computerized tomography are not suitable for use into portable magnetic resonance (NMR) devices due to their volume. This is the reason why this kind of devices are used just in computerized tomography, with the patient's head facing the front, whereas in nuclear magnetic resonance the patient places the head facing up. The use of two different positions in computerized tomography and NMR, hinders the fusion of images obtained by these techniques.
The frame for securing thermoplastic mask here offered overcomes the mentioned problems because it has a support portion of the head (1b) which is narrower than usual, and the means for fixing the mask to the frame (3a, 3b) are less bulky than those of the prior art. Therefore, the present system may be used in both portable NMR and computerized tomography, thus allowing fusion of the images obtained by the two techniques.
