A method for identifying a chemical compound which is capable of inhibiting acylcoenzyme A/cholesterol acyltransferase II or III and methods for inhibiting wild-type acylcoenzyme A/ cholesterol acyltransferase II or III in a subject are disclosed. A pharmaceutical composition comprising the chemical compound capable of inhibiting acylcoenzyme A/cholesterol acyltransferase II or III and a method of treating a subject who has atherosclerosis or hyperlipidemia are also proposed.
