Name of the inventor: Judah Z. Weinberger A radiation therapy apparatus and method for applying radiation to a patient in synchronism with one of several states of a cardiac cycle and one of several states of a respiratory cycle of the patient are described. An electrocardiograph and a respiratory monitor are operatively connected to the patient. A controller receives the output from the electrocardiograph and respiratory monitor. Based on the state of cardiac and respiratory cycles, the controller produces a signal to the radiation applicator. The radiation applicator then applies radiation to the patient. The method is useful in treating tumors of the heart, mediastinum, lung, breast, kidney, esophagus, liver and peripheral blood vessels.
