Name of the inventor: David Carling Methods of assaying, monitoring and modulating LKB1 activity and its downstream targets are described. The use of AMPK (AMP activated protein Kinase) in the manufacture of medicaments for the treatment/prevention of certain disorders is also described. The method for assaying LKB1 activity comprises providing a sample with LKB1, contacting the sample with a substrate kinase under conditions that permit phosphorylation, and monitoring incorporation of phosphate into the substrate kinase. The incorporation of phosphate into the substrate kinase indicates LKB1 activity. The method discusses the use of yeast cells with certain genetic alterations relating to AMPKK and AMPK. The method has applications in the treatment of diabetes, Peutz-Jeghers Syndrome (PJS), obesity and hypercardiomyotrophy (HCM) in a subject.
