Name of the inventor: Lloyd Greene The direction of progenitor cells along specific pathways of neuronal differentiation is discussed. A method for promoting differentiation of a neural stem cell or a neural progenitor cell in vivo or in vitro into a differentiated neural cell is performed by inhibiting activating transcription factor 5 (ATF5) in the cell. The differentiated neural cells may be transplanted into a subject to treat the nervous tissue degeneration. The method will promote a replenishable source of neurons which will help treat neurodegenerative and demyelinating conditions. Description 2: Name of the inventor: Lloyd Greene PhD Methods for regulating the growth and/or survival of tumor cells and stem cells and kits for use in detecting and treating tumors are described. The method for regulating differentiation of a stem cell or a progenitor cell into a differentiated cell comprises modulating the expression/function of ATF5 in the cell. A method for producing differentiated neural cells and for treating nervous tissue degeneration is provided. The method for treating/preventing a tumor in a subject comprises contacting the tumor cells with an amount of an ATF5 inhibitor effective to induce cell death in the tumor cells. The method allows for the manipulation of the proliferation, differentiation and/or survival of tumor cells that provides a therapy for the treatment of cancers.
