Full description

A new composition of matter comprising microparticles with both oxidized cellulose and glucans. The composition includes pharmaceutically acceptable carrier and as an active ingredient oxidized cellulose. Preferable the oxidized cellulose should be formed as microparticles and the combimation can be used for the treatment of asthma and allergy. keywords: formulation, allergy

Anti-Allergy Inhaled and Intranasal Microparticles

Categories

Asthma , allergy, microparticles

Development Stage

In vivo POC and first prototype was developed

Patent Status

PCT filed  (WO 2007/113835)

 Highlights

  • Allergy symptoms occurs when the immune system reacts to substances (allergens) that are generally harmless and does not cause an immune response.
  • Allergy shots (immunotherapy) are occasionally recommended if the allergen cannot be avoided and if symptoms are hard to control.
  • Our new approach is to Prevent IgE-mediated allergic reaction by blocking and clearing the pollen allergens with oxidized cellulose via its polysaccharide binding domain.
  • Wide administration mode : inhalation, intranasal, ocular, topical and mucosal.
  • Oxidized cellulose has a long safety track record as an invasive medical device.
  •  Commercial source of GMP manufactured oxidized cellulose is available, therefore there is a short regulatory path as a medical device (510K).

 Our Innovation

  • Oxidized cellulose effectively prevents allergies, asthma and hay fever.
  • Oxidized cellulose is a biodegradable and biocompatible product that has exhibited a high affinity for binding a broad-spectrum of allergens (pollen, mites, egg and cat dander).
  • The low solubility level enables it to be cleared by the mucocilliary system from the airways to the gastro-intestinal track.
  • The half life of oxidized cellulose is 14-55 days ( in the lungs/ gastro-intestinal track) respectively.
  • In vivo studies reveals that oxidized cellulose powder inhalation is an effective treatment in the reduction of allergic inflammation in the lungs.

 The opportunity

  • According to the American College of Allergy, Asthma & Immunology (ACAAI), allergies affect an estimated 40 to 50 million people in the U.S. Allergies are not only bothersome, but they also have been linked to a variety of common and serious chronic respiratory illnesses, such as sinusitis and asthma. Today allergic rhinitis represents a drug market worth more than $ 3 billion annual sales according to IMS figures.

Development Milestones

  • The company is presently seeking to raise an additional $2 million to complete preclinical and toxicology studies and to initiate clinical trials.
