Full description

No in vivo data- New multifunctional steroid compound used for treating e.g. asthma, Alzheimer disease and psoriasis comprises steroid component, superoxide dismutase mimic component and optionally nitogen oxide donor component. The present invention relates to multifunctional compounds comprising an anti-inflammatory or immunomodulatory component, and at least one SOD mimic component capable of reacting with reactive oxygen species, and to their use in treating inflammatory bowel disease comprising ulcerative colitis and Crohn's disease. Preferred anti-inflammatory or immunomodulatory components comprise derivatives of salicylic acid and steroids. Keywords: inflamation

Unique compound offers versatile administration for a wide variety of diseases

Categories

Asthma, diabetes mellitus, cardiovascular disease, respiratory distress syndrome, bronchitis, pneumonia, inflammatory bowel disease, neurodegenerative disease, endothelial dysfunction, angina, hypertension, congestive heart failure, erectile dysfunction, renal disorders

Development Stage

Concept proven

Patent Status

Patent WO 2004/037843 A2

Market Size

$60B

Highlights

  • Medications act simultaneously as steroids, superoxide dismutase (SOD) mimic component, and nitric oxide (NO) donor, with synergistic effects, increasing their efficacy
  • Administrable orally, topically, intravenously or through inhalation
  • May be administered in lower dosages than traditional steroids and results in reduced side effects, hypersensitivity, tolerance and toxicity

Our Innovation

  • agonist compounds capable of acting as both nitrogen oxide donors and as scavengers of reactive oxygen species, combined with improved steroid compounds that include superoxide dismutase mimic groups and nitric oxide donor groups
  • Multifunctional steroid compounds include at least one superoxide dismutase (SOD) mimic component, a steroid component, and at least one nitric oxide (NO) donor component
  • Provides prophylaxis and treatment of conditions involving oxidative stress and free-radical injury; respiratory, inflammatory, and autoimmune disorders; arthritis, allergic conditions, inflammatory bowel diseases, neurodegenerative diseases
  • All compounds are small molecular weight molecules with sufficiently balanced water solubility and membrane permeability to be orally bioavailable

The Opportunity

  • Addresses a wide range of disease entities
  • Versatility of administration route expands marketability
  • Reduces side effects and tolerance issues present in currently marketed medications
