Vascular Clip and Devices for Sutureless Anastomosis and Bypasses (08-31_09-09)

University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences
Novel Surgical Clips for Vascular Bypass and Tissue Grafts for Vascular surgery, vascular grafts, sutureless anastomosis and bypass surgery

Mechanism of action

Surgical Tool

Full description

CIP - Vascular Clip and Devices for Sutureless Anastomosis and Bypasses – this vascular clip device (available in different sizes and shapes) is similar to the aneurysm clip and has multiple applications for both sutureless anastomosis and bypass surgery.  The clip will shorten surgery time and minimize the occlusion time during both regular anastomosis and when using other complicated devices.

The sutureless anastomosis is similar to ELANA technique but does not utilize a laser and the occlusion time is minimum (i.e. less than three minutes for each side of the anastomosis). This clip can be used with homogenous craft and artificial craft, and can be applied to the smallest vessel in both the brain and the heart, as well as to major vessels such like the Aorta (i.e. vessel diameters from less than 2mm to the largest vessel in the human body).

The advantages of this new technique:

1-      Sutureless anastomosis for any vascular bypass in any part of the human body.

2-      Shortening the time of surgery.

3-      Shortening the occlusion time of the parent vessels, this is so crucial in the brain and the heart.

4-      The anastomosis can be performed through a key hole in the head, or by endoscopy in the chest and abdomen.

5-      It’s expected to be less expensive than all similar techniques.

6-      In most of the cases this technique does not require a high level of skill to be successfully accomplished, any surgeon can perform the procedure skillfully.

Over 800,000 coronary artery bypass surgeries are performed each year which require the anastomosis of the new vasculature to the occluded artery.  This surgical procedure alone represents only a portion of the uses for the implementation of a unique surgical clip that has been designed by UAMS surgeons.     The use of this uniquely designed surgical clip in vascular surgery can simplify the procedure and improve outcomes.    The surgical devices for vascular procedures that are currently on the market are unnecessarily complicated and consist of multiple components that complicate the procedure for the surgeon.   There are different types of surgical clips required for various vascular surgery applications from coronary artery bypass to fallopian tube resections.  The design of the current device greatly simplifies the procedures required for the anastomosis of various arteries and other vasculature.  Furthermore, the design of the current device provides a single unit that eliminates the need for multiple functional parts and for ease of use.  The UAMS surgical clip accelerates the procedure time and thus is more effective than those currently in use.   The clip is designed to also be used in a variety of surgical methods outside vascular applications.

A primary advantage of this new clip is its ability to accelerate vascular bypass graft procedures with minimal interruption of tissue perfusion and without leakage.    These vascular surgery procedures using this device can be performed on vessel diameters from less than 2mm to the largest vessel in the human body.   Other design features of this device will also facilitate its uses in the formation of vesicle grafts.

Thus the proprietary design of the UAMS clip is will shorten the time of the surgical procedure and minimize risk to the patient during both routine and complex anastomosis procedures.  The variable size selection and shape of this clip will broaden its utility while providing the vascular surgeon a wide range of choices to accommodate different kinds of closures throughout the body.

A simple prototype has been successfully developed and tested in cadaver models during surgical training.
