AvuganeTM comprises a new, proprietary formulation of the HDAC inhibitor VPA with the potential for use as a topical treatment of inflammatory skin diseases, including acne vulgaris (common acne), psoriasis and atopic dermatitis. Promising data from a double-blind, randomised Phase II study of acne vulgaris patients was reported in April 2006, with AvuganeTM showing comparable efficacy and advantageous tolerability compared to a standard, marketed retinoid therapy. TopoTarget has initiated a double-blind randomised, placebo-controlled clinical Phase II study in acne vulgaris to further investigate the clinical utility of AvuganeTM. If successful, TopoTarget may consider conducting trials in psoriasis and atopic dermatitis.
