Multiple rib fractures in trauma patients are associated with significant morbidity and mortality. Following multiple rib fracture injuries rapid patient mobilization, respiratory support, and proper pain management will result in speedy patient recovery, as measured by length of stay in the intensive care unit and the hospital.
This novel protocol aid supports clinical decision making for critical care health providers. This compilation of research findings (100 patients) utilizes the clinical radiological result of rib fractures, plus the patient’s age factor conversion to establish the “Rib Score”. The Rib Score determines the arm of the protocol to follow for mobilization, respiratory support, and/or pain management.
