SST® - Saliva Supporting Tablets for patients with xerostomia

Sinclair Pharmaceuticals
SST is a pleasant-tasting pastille made up of organic acids and a calcium salt buffer for the management of Xerostomia (dry mouth). It is designed to support the production of saliva without causing or accelerating tooth decay.

Mechanism of action

SST is designed to increase the saliva flow; SST has a calcium buffer that prevents demineralisation of the teeth, even with long-term use.

Full description

SST is a pleasant-tasting pastille made up of organic acids and a calcium salt buffer for the management of Xerostomia (dry mouth). It is designed to support the production of saliva without causing or accelerating tooth decay, as it contains the sweetening agent sorbitol instead of sugar, and also because the calcium buffer prevents tooth demineralisation.

SST tablets also contain polyethylene glycol, malic acid, sodium citrate, calcium phosphate dibasic, hydrogenated cottonseed oil, citric acid, magnesium stearate and silicon dioxide.

The tablets should be allowed to dissolve slowly in the mouth when needed. To obtain the optimal effect, the tablet should be moved around in the mouth. This causes increased saliva flow.

SST® is indicated for dry mouth due to any cause, provided that there is surviving functional salivary gland tissue and a patent duct system. It has been used for many years in Sweden for patients with dry mouth and has been tested clinically in both short- and long-term trials but no serious side effects have been reported.

Disease overview

Xerostomia, or 'dry mouth' is the abnormal reduction of saliva, usually due to medication, disease, surgery or ionising radiation. It is characterised by feelings of a dry mouth, but the relationship between the symptoms (feelings of dry mouth) and the signs (actual lack of saliva) may vary. Xerostomia is extremely common in the general population and even more common in specific groups of patients (with cancer, diabetes, rheumatoid conditions, and those receiving radiotherapy to the head and neck, various medications, including CNS medications, e.g. psychiatry).

Patients with xerostomia suffer a reduced quality of life, having more caries, difficulty eating and sometimes speaking and even sleeping.

SST is designed to increase the saliva flow, and therefore not only relieve the discomfort of xerostomia but also provide additional protective qualities that saliva provides.

Stage of development

SST is classified as a Class III Medical Device in the European Union. SST can be sold freely within these countries, without further registration requirements. The CE mark signifies the product's conformity with the Directive.

In the U.S.A., SST is registered as a 510(k) OTC medical device, to be sold both on prescription and over the counter.
