Full description

The Decapinol Gum Applicator is an important line extension of Decapinol Mouthwash, Decapinol Toothpaste, Decapinol Gel and Decapinol Spray, offering a novel and convenient way of treating periodontal disease. The Decapinol Gum Applicator was specifically developed for dental professionals, and its unique ergonomic design makes it easy to apply and suitable for various conditions.

Delmopinol Hydrochloride helps to treat and prevent gingivitis and periodontitis. Its key ingredient is the cationic surfactant Delmopinol Hydrochloride, and its unique mode of action prevents the attachment as well as the adherence of plaque bacteria to the teeth, gingiva and to itself . This interference with the plaque build-up process prevents the onset of gingivitis that can lead to periodontitis.

It also interferes with the enzyme GTF, which is responsible for the production of glucans (the glue or cement that is critical for plaque build-up). This results is less cohesive and less adhesive plaque bacteria.

Each vial contains Delmopinol Hydrochloride that is placed directly in the periodontal pocket via a novel delivery system. This is a professional-use only product and provides complimentary treatment for patients with periodontal disease.

Disease overview

Gingivitis is a non-specific term used to describe an inflammation of the gums (gingiva), regardless of the aetiology, and affects approximately 80-90% of the adult population .

Plaque-associated gingivitis is an inflammation of the interdental and gingival margin that can be controlled or prevented by removing and/or inhibiting microbial plaque accumulation.

Periodontitis is a more serious condition, involving inflammation of the periodontium, the areas surrounding the teeth. This usually affects about 13%-15% of the adult population . The structures that anchor the teeth to the bone are also affected, and there may be apical migration of epithelial attachment and loss of alveolar bone leading to tooth and bone loss.

One serious potential consequence of periodontitis is its connection to heart disease. People with severe periodontal disease are four times more likely to have an acute myocardial infarction than those without; it is believed that dental plaque can enter the bloodstream and stimulate arterial plaque formation.

Gingivitis always precedes periodontitis and so prevention or treatment of gingivitis is considered an accepted method of preventing peridontitis.

It is available either as an Intro pack with one applicator and 10 vials (8 doses of 0.25 ml each), or as a refill pack with 10 vials.

Stage of development

Decapinol Gum Applicator will be registered in both the EU and the US during 2008.
