Decapinol Spray - A new and intelligent treatment for gingivitis & prevention of periodontitis

Sinclair Pharmaceuticals
Decapinol Spray is the most recent line extension of Decapinol mouth rinse, Decapinol toothpaste and Decapinol Gel, and provides both the clinician and patient with an alternative in treating gingivitis and periodontitis.

Mechanism of action

Decapinol Spray changes the surface properties of the salivary layer coating the teeth, so bacteria cannot easily adhere and colonise.

Full description

Delmopinol Hydrochloride helps to treat and prevent gingivitis and periodontitis, and reduce periodontal pocket depth through its application along the gingival margin and into interdental spaces.

Its key ingredient is the cationic surfactant Delmopinol hydrochloride (5mg/ml) and its unique mode of action prevents the attachment as well as the adherence of plaque bacteria to the teeth, gingiva and to itself . This interference with the plaque build-up process prevents the onset of gingivitis that can lead to periodontitis.

It also interferes with the enzyme GTF, which is responsible for the production of glucans (the glue or cement that is critical for plaque build-up). This results is less cohesive and less adhesive plaque bacteria, making it easier to remove by conventional tooth brushing techniques.

It also maintains a healthy composition of oral bacteria .

PVP & Hyaluronic Acid (barrier forming agents) help to provide pain relief of minor oral lesions/irritations and localised trauma following scaling and root planing (SRP), tooth extraction, implant surgery and periodontal surgery. Through this "liquid bandage" mechanism of action, gingival bleeding is reduced, local pain relief given and both ingredients facilitate the natural healing process of the soft gingival tissue following treatment.

Benefits of a spray formulation

Decapinol Spray offers a convenient way to treat gingivitis and periodontitis. The Delmopinol molecule (proven in efficacy & safety both short & long term) has a unique mode of action that prevents the attachment of plaque-causing bacteria to tooth surfaces and to each other.

Decapinol Spray does not cause semi-permanent tooth staining associated with other CHX based sprays and so can be used long term ~ this leads to high customer satisfaction & compliance.

Decapinol Spray promotes healthy balance of oral microflora, as it doesn't kill plaque-causing bacteria, but rather prevents them from attaching to tooth surfaces and gingiva.

Decapinol Spray is convenient ~ it can be incorporated into a patient's oral hygiene routine when gingivitis is prevalent, as it is not affected by some key ingredients found in toothpaste (SLS).

Finally, Decapinol Spray offers patients ease-of-use, ease-of-application and is available in a convenient spray pump bottle. For maximum results, Decapinol Spray can be used in conjunction with either Decapinol Rinse and/or Decapinol Toothpaste.

Disease overview

Gingivitis is a non-specific term used to describe an inflammation of the gums (gingiva), regardless of the ætiology, and affects approximately 80-90% of the adult population . Plaque-associated gingivitis is an inflammation of the interdental and gingival margin that can be controlled or prevented by removing and/or inhibiting microbial plaque accumulation.

Periodontitis is a more serious condition, involving inflammation of the periodontium, the areas surrounding the teeth - this usually affects 13%-15% of the adult population . The structures that anchor the teeth to the bone are affected - there may be apical migration of epithelial attachment and loss of alveolar bone leading to tooth and bone loss.

Gingivitis always precedes periodontitis and so prevention or treatment of gingivitis is considered an accepted method of preventing periodontitis.

Stage of development

In the European Union, Decapinol Spray is registered as a Class IIa medical device, and has as such been awarded a CE mark. The Medical Device Directive applies to all European Union countries, which means Decapinol Spray can be sold freely within these countries, without further registration requirements. The CE mark signifies the product's conformity with the Directive.

In the United States, we are awaiting approval from the FDA on Decapinol Spray.
