Antileukoprotease (ALP) is a peptide inhibitor that has been identified and cloned from skin tissue and shown to be a specific inhibitor of the stratum corneum chymotryptic enzyme (SCCE). Researchers have demonstrated that antileukoprotease (ALP) is overexpressed in low malignant potential tumors and carcinomas in ovary, while little or no transcript is present in normal adult and fetal tissue. The indications are that ALP may be effective as both a diagnostic and a monitoring tool for ovarian tumors. This molecule fulfills many criteria necessary for a valuable marker for tumor growth and progression. It is overexpressed in tumor cells, secreted to the extracellular space, and is a relatively small protein, providing good opportunity for uptake into the circulation. Additionally, it is a very stable protein providing potential for relatively long half life in the circulation. Because ALP is a protease inhibitor, it will be useful in the abatement of both tumor growth and progression.
