
The present invention provides a substantially pure phoholipase A2 protein isolated and purified from rabbit kidney cortex, having a molecular weight of 28 kDa as determined by SDS-PAGE, is calcium independent, is cytoslic, has a specific activity of approximately 1.2 umol/mg protein/minute and pH optimum of approximately 7.5, and exhibits a preferential hydrolysis toward sn-2 fatty acid from diradyglycerophospholipids. Also provided are various methods of using, inhibiting or measuring. This enzyme should be an effective target for Acute Renal failure. Studies suggest that the activation of this enzyme may play a role in the observed phospholipid hydrolysis that occurs during ischemic cell injury in the kidney.
