Abiogen Pharma is developing a new intra-articular (I.A.) formulation of Clodronate for local treatment of peripheral joint osteoarthritis (OA).
Clodronate is a second generation bisphosphonate and it has demonstrated efficacy in the treatment of various bone diseases including Paget's disease, hypercalcemia of malignancy, osteolytic bone metastases, multiple myeloma, primary hyperparathyrosis and osteoporosis.
In addition to its ability to inhibit bone resorption Clodronate has been shown to have anti-inflammatory effects, either in vitro, in vivo and in humans, mainly due to its activity on several agents involved in the Osteoarthritis process.
Intra-articular (i.a.) clodronate shows anti-inflammatory properties; it has been previously used with success in the treatment of knee-osteoarthritis. Two spontaneous trials and a registrative pilot trial reported the efficacy of clodronate in improving the clinical status of the patients, as showed by the reduction of both spontaneous pain and pain on active movement.
Based on the above mentioned positive previous experiences on patients suffering from gonarthrosis, to which Clodronate was administered once or twice a week, Abiogen designed a Phase II clinical trial with the goal of identifying the most effective posology for the treatment of joint pain associated to gonarthrosis.
Abiogen Pharma's Research Group is involved in drug development in osteoarthritis and joint degenerative disorders: as a consequence, most of the compounds developed by Abiogen researchers are currently widely used in the treatment of osteo-articular pathologies.
