The incidence of human obesity and diabetes is rising and has become a major concern for public health. The relationship between obesity, diabetes and energy expenditure is unclear, and ongoing research is aimed at determining both environmentally and physiologically relevant factors. Researchers at the University of Nebraska Medical Center have developed a mouse model that will provide insight into these relationships. Their results indicate that compared to control mice, these knockout mice expend less energy while engaging in the same amount of activity, eat less while becoming overweight, and show pre-diabetic symptoms. Manipulation of the knockout gene appears to be a promising target to not only treat obesity and diabetes, but to develop therapeutics to decrease energy expenditure for under-nourished populations.
