Beta blocker, selective blockade of beta 1 receptors

Esmolol is an ultra fast acting beta1-receptor blocker (cardio selective) with a very short elimination half-life of 9 minutes. This product is used for the short-term treatment of supraventricular tachycardia and for the rapid control of ventricular rate in patients with atrial fibrillation or atrial flutter in perioperative, postoperative, or other circumstances where short-term control of the ventricular rate with a short acting agent is desirable (e.g. myocardial infarct). Target groups are anaesthetists and ICU-clinicians.
