UNMC researchers discovered and demonstrated an inverse correlation between the expression of the cellular form of Prostatic Acid Phosphatase (PAcP) and the presence of carcinoma cells in the prostate. Specifically, expression of cellular PAcP is associated with slow proliferation of normal prostate and a decrease in its expression is associated with increased cellular proliferation of prostatic carcinoma cells. Expression analyses of cellular PAcP can be used as a therapeutic approach and as a prognostic marker during treatment of prostate cancer.

Delivery of cellular PAcP by various methods can be used therapeutically for the treatment of prostate cancer. In cases of androgen resistant disease, cellular PAcP detection methods can be used as measures of treatment efficacy. PAcP has been correlated with decreased tumor size in xenograft mouse prostate cancer model.
