A NEW AEROSOL TREATMENT FOR ASTHMA USING A NON-STEROIDAL COMPLEX WHICH PREVENTS BRONCHIAL REMODELLING

University of Liège (ULg), Interface Entreprises-Université, Liege
Aerosolized pharmaceutical composition with low potential toxicity, significantly reducing airway inflammation and remodelling

Mechanism of action

metalloproteinase inhibitor

Full description

As of today, the market for asthma products represents about 5 billions dollars in the U.S. Currently, asthma therapy is most often conducted using inhaled steroids or derivatives. However, that classical therapy can not prevent bronchial remodelling, which increases the rate of lung function loss during the life. The present licensing opportunity relates to a new medicinal composition designed in order to control both asthma (bronchial inflammation and hyperresponsiveness) and airway remodelling. Based on data from basic research indicating that MMPs (Matrix Metalloproteinases) are involved in airways inflammation and remodelling in asthma, we designed a therapeutic approach based on selective MMP inhibition. The drawbacks of long-term steroidal treatment of asthma are now well documented. Additionally, this therapy does not prevent airway remodelling and its respiratory complications. This new pharmaceutical composition has been designed to be aerosolized, allowing a preferential topical approach and thus reducing potential toxicities. It has also been shown to significantly reduce the occurrence of airway inflammation and remodelling when administered to animals.
