p38 mitogen-activated protein kinase (p38 MAPK) is a key cell-signaling protein involved in regulating the expression of pro-inflammatory cytokines such as TNF-a and interleukin-1b (IL-1b). The determination of increased activity in inflamed tissue and the efficacy of p38 MAPK inhibitors in experimental disease models validated this protein kinase as a target for treatment of inflammatory diseases.
c-a-i-r biosciences GmbH acquired the complete patent portfolio including the substance library of Merckle GmbH, a family-owned pharmaceutical company which initiated a p38 MAPK discovery program in the late 1990s. With the objective to select (a) clinical candidate(s), c-a-i-r biosciences uses and extents this library by chemical synthesis and pharmacological profiling of new candidates.
A series of PCT-application have been filed and are currently in the validation and approval process. All key territories (North America, Europe, India, China, Japan and more) are covered.
