A new treatment for diarrhoea and endotoxaemic shock in bovine (with potential application to other mammals)
A new veterinary medicinal composition designed to maintain the oxygenic consumption, to restore hydric, electrolytic and energetic status, as well as the blood pH in affected mammals.
Full description
All over the world, diarrhoea is one of the major causes of
morbidity and
mortality in calves. Prospective studies of diarrhoea point
out an incidence
of 20 or even 55 cases per 100 calves. A mortality rate for
diarrhoea of 1/
20 is usually considered in Europe.
Actually, treatment of diarrhoea by fluidtherapy only
focuses on correction
of hydric, electrolytic, acido basic and energetic
disorders. However, it has
been demonstrated that oxygen transport by the blood and oxygen
extraction at the tissue level was also impaired in
diarrhoeic calves
(Cambier et al, American Journal of Veterinary Research,
2001) and that
classical treatments are unable to correct (and may even
worsen) these
impairments of oxygen extraction (Cambier et al., in press).
In this
context, the present invention relates to a new veterinary
medicinal
composition designed in order to maintain the oxygenic
consumption by :
- an increase in oxygen extraction at the tissue level
- an increase in cardiac output
The new medicinal composition is also designed to restore
hydric,
electrolytic and energetic status in affected mammals, as
well as the blood
pH, in a range which is compatible with the blood oxygen
transport
The potential applications are the treatment of diseases
associated with
tissue hypoxia in mammals, particularly diarrhoea and
endotoxaemic
shock in bovine
