Teva Welcomes Pharmacy White Paper

— LEEDS, England, April 4

LEEDS, England, April 4 /PRNewswire/ -- Teva UK Limited, the biggest generic drug manufacturer(x) in the UK, has welcomed news that this week's Department of Health's Pharmacy White Paper(^) has opened the way for an expanded role for England's pharmacies.

The paper envisages a number of changes for pharmacy, and the company says that it is pleased that health ministers have recognised the potential for community pharmacy to do more to address access to health and wellbeing services. "Medicines Use Reviews have already shown that community pharmacy, with the support of industry partners, can make a real difference to patients' lives," said Teva's Managing Director John Beighton. "They also show that pharmacy has the capability and resolve to do more under the Contract. The White Paper can move this forward and position pharmacy as an essential component of delivering healthcare in the community."

Mr Beighton called on contractors to make the most of the sources of help they already have to be in the best position to capitalise on new opportunities. "Firms like Teva are already offering help to deliver MURs and other services. My message is to say that people like us are available to help - take that help from partners, build relationships with industry that enable contractors to be ready for the first day of every new service."

Mr Beighton added that the company's Partners in Progress programme, launched in late 2007 to help contractors deliver MURs, was an example of how pharmacy and industry partners could work together to provide a sustainable programme that delivers patient care and benefits to pharmacy.
