DUBLIN, May 19 /PRNewswire/ -- A young lady from New Zealand who discovered that chewing sugar-free gum made her seriously ill has bravely agreed to act as a guinea-pig in an experiment in California. Abby Cormack, 26, hopes that the potentially dangerous tests, to take place next month, will show that the ingestion of aspartame causes an aberration of blood capillary and neuron function.

This is the first time any human has voluntarily subjected themselves to such damaging experimentation to prove the correlation between aspartame and the resulting symptoms.

Aspartame, heavily used in sugar-free gum, is an artificial sweetener that has long had links with cancer and other serious health issues.

Wellington resident Abby's troubles began early last year when she became depressed and anxious and had trouble sleeping. A psychiatrist diagnosed mild depression. But, Miss Cormack found this hard to grasp as she enjoyed a stable home life, had a steady job and lots of friends.

Things got steadily worse for Abby: panic attacks and suicidal thoughts took over. "I started getting physical symptoms," she said. "Muscle cramps that started off in my legs. I put the muscle cramps down to weight training."

Abby stopped doing weights, but the cramps got worse. Tests for multiple sclerosis came back negative. Exhaustion and excruciating pain followed, and the final indignity was losing control of her bladder at work.

Abby was a heavy user of sugar-free chewing gum, and her mother suggested researching the contents of the gum. She 'googled' phenylalanine, and aspartame popped up. "My symptoms came up - every one of them," she said. Aspartame is widely used as an artificial sweetener in foods and 'diet' drinks. Abby packed in the gum and her symptoms disappeared within days.

Dr Janet Hull is a victim of aspartame poisoning and has written a book on the subject. She is in no doubt about its poisonous properties: "The dangers of aspartame poisoning have been a well-guarded secret since the 1980s. The research and history of aspartame is conclusive as a cause of illness and toxic reactions in the human body. Aspartame is a dangerous chemical food additive, and its use, especially during pregnancy and by children, is one of the greatest modern tragedies of all."
