Summary
Ferring was founded in 1950 by Dr. Frederik Paulsen. Ferring was one of the first companies to develop and sell pharmaceutical products based on naturally-occurring pituitary peptide hormones. The peptides were initially extracted from porcine, and to some extent whale, pituitary glands until Dr. Paulsen initiated industrial synthesis of peptides. He explored the concept that they could be reconfigured to produce compounds with all the advantages and none of the limitations of the naturally-occurring molecule. The development of the product MinirinĀ®, used to treat nocturnal enuresis, or bedwetting, during the 1980's formed the basis of Ferring's international expansion and boosted revenues. Ferring Research Institute was founded in 1985 in the UK, and developed a unique know-how for protease inhibitors and for the development of peptido-mimetics. During the 1990s, Ferring accelerated the opening of new subsidiaries in eastern and western Europe, South America, Asia, South Africa and in the Middle East. Ferring invests heavily in research and development to ensure a future flow of new and innovative products and is currently working on some major Research & Development projects which will complement Ferring's existing portfolio, and add a new generation of products to some of Ferring's most medically-successful and profitable speciality brands. The company intends to consolidate its position and strengthen its international image by further exploiting Ferring's acquired skills and technologies. If necessary, Ferring Pharmaceuticals will pursue these objectives in partnership with other companies. Ferring operates four production sites in Sweden Denmark, Germany and the Czech Republic and three research institutes in the USA, UK and Denmark. The company also has marketing and sales companies in 37 countries covering Europe, North America, South America, Hong Kong, India, Israel, Japan, Jordan and Korea, South Africa and Taiwan.
