ThromboGenics was founded in Dublin, Ireland, in 1998 by Professor Désiré Collen and Randall Moreadith. Professor Collen is a world renowned expert in cardiovascular disease. His laboratory was the first to produce clinical supply of tissue plasminogen activator, also known as t-PA, one of the most effective drugs for thrombolytic therapy of acute myocardial infarction. This molecule was licensed to Genentech in exchange for royalties on worldwide sales. ThromboGenics closed a financing round in 2001 with East Hill Management in Boston. In May 2003, ThromboGenics established a US headquarters in New York. ThromboGenics is a company focused on innovative therapies for the prevention and treatment of cardiovascular diseases, and on the development of improved technologies of embryonic stem cell cultures and transgenesis as tools for improved drug discovery. By combining these technologies, ThromboGenics aims to be a leading biopharmaceutical company developing innovative therapies and products.
