Affimed is a product-oriented biotech company with a strong position in monoclonal antibodies - the fastest growing segment of the pharmaceutical industry. Affimed is currently the only company that has developed two distinctly different antibody libraries - a naive library derived from the immune system's antibody gene repertoire and a fully synthetic library of human antibodies.
From its inception, Affimed has focused its strategy on developing human antibody therapeutics. By utilizing its broad portfolio of proprietary in-house technology platforms together with freedom-to-operate licenses, the company has established an early stage and preclinical product pipeline of promising novel product candidates in oncology, thrombosis and immune suppression.
The use of both antibody libraries ensures a high diversity and a higher probability of isolating very specific human antibodies against any target, and significantly increases our chances of isolating commercially-relevant antibodies. This translates into the ability to tackle previously difficult targets. The quality of Affimed´s libraries and its screening expertise have been validated by the isolation of antibodies targeting complex cell surface molecules.
Additionally, Affimed has developed new, proprietary antibody formats - unique tetravalent antibodies, so called 'Tandabs' - which are particularly well suited to destroying tumor cells using Affimed's proprietary technology for the recruitment of cytotoxic immune cells. Affimed's novel technology has facilitated the development of highly potent reagents for major cancer indications. Affimed's Tandab for recruiting and activating T cells to treat non-hodgkin's lymphoma has been shown to be extremely potent in animal model studies as well as in experiments with samples from patients with chronic lymphocytic leukemia. In contrast to conventional antibodies, Tandab products can be produced in established recombinant bacteria and yeast production systems, significantly reducing production costs.
Affimed's internal focus is firmly set upon oncology. In line with this, licensees are being sought for the non-oncology programs in autoimmune diseases and thrombosis. Within the oncology field, Affimed seeks to establish research collaborations for its existing preclinical portfolio with pharma and biotech companies with strong development capabilities. Discussions with companies for both of these types of transactions are actively underway.
