Active Biotech AB is a Swedish biotech company focusing on the research and development of pharmaceuticals, primarily for the treatment of autoimmune / inflammatory diseases and cancer.
Active Biotech's mission is to develop, efficiently and cost-effectively, new remedies for illnesses where today's treatment options are inadequate, to create value in the long term for its shareholders through peak competence in selected niches on a global market and to be an attractive employer by offering an atmosphere permeated by creativity and the potential for individual development. he Active Biotech of today originated from a research project at Pharmacia now known as the TTS project. In 1991, Pharmacia set up a new research facility in Lund to focus on this work. When Pharmacia merged with Upjohn in 1997, the Lund department was threatened with closure. This was when Active Biotech bought both the facility and the operations. The research portfolio included both the TTS and the SAIK projects. By 1996, Active Biotech had also bought SBL Vaccin from the Swedish State. This part of its operations was later sold to UK company PowderJect Pharmaceuticals in 2001. Active Biotech was founded by Bo Håkansson, who left the business in 2000.
