CollaGenex is developing dermatological applications of its proprietary IMPACS technology. Oracea (doxyxcycline, USP) 40 mg* was approved by the FDA on May 26, 2006.
In 1983 the first study of what is now known as IMPACS® (Inhibitors of Multiple Proteases And CytokineS) technology was conducted by L.M. Golub at SUNY Stoney Brook. The first exclusive license on IMPACS was secured in 1985 by Consumer Dental Products Division of Johnson & Johnson. J & J conducted Phase I and II clinical trials of Periostat®, and synthesized several proprietary analogs. Then in 1992 J & J divested all ethical products, transferring Periostat to new company, CollaGenex. In 1996 the company changed it's name to CollaGenex Pharmaceuticals, and became a publicly traded entity. FDA and UK Medicines Control Agency approved Periostat tablets in 2001. The company is focused on developing dermatological and dental products.
