NPS was founded in 1986. Two rounds of venture capital financing were completed in 1992, followed by an initial public offering of stock in 1994. Secondary public offerings of stock were completed in 1996, 2000, and 2002, along with a private offering of stock in 2000. In December 1999, NPS Pharmaceuticals and Allelix Biopharmaceuticals of Toronto, Canada merged.
