The company in detail

Profile

NPS Pharmaceuticals is committed to the discovery, development and commercialization of small molecule therapeutics and recombinant proteins to treat CNS, gastrointestinal and bone and mineral diseases. NPS has a history of successful drug discovery. With one approved product on the market and several more in development, NPS has proven, well established discovery capabilities.

NPS's first approved product, cinacalcet HCl, is marketed in the United States by Amgen under the brand name Sensipar® as a treatment for secondary hyperparathyroidism. NPS’ partner Kirin is developing cinacalcet HCl as a treatment for this condition in Japan.

The company's most advanced drug candidates are PREOS® (parathyroid hormone [rDNA origin] for injection) for the treatment of osteoporosis, and teduglutide for gastrointestinal disorders including short bowel syndrome. Teduglutide has been granted orphan drug status in the United States and Europe for this condition.

The company's earlier-stage drug candidates include small molecule calcilytics to treat osteoporosis (partner: GlaxoSmithKline), modulators of metabotropic glutamate receptors to treat neurological and psychiatric conditions (partner: AstraZeneca), and glycine re-uptake inhibitors to treat schizophrenia (partner: Johnson & Johnson).

NPS Pharmaceuticals was formed in 1986. The corporate headquarters are based in New Jersey

Partnering strategy/interests

Partnering is an integral element of NPS Pharmaceuticals’ business strategy,  the company has a number of established partnerships with several global biotech/pharma companies (including GlaxoSmithKline and AstraZeneca) and several universities.

NPS is currently looking for partners interested in licensing three discovery-stage programs in the CNS area.
