Galilaeus was established in 1994 as a spin-off from pharmaceutical company Leiras. Since 1997, Galilaeus has had research and pilot-process facilities in the town of Kaarina, located 10 kilometers from the city of Turku. Galilaeus is a company which providing Process Development and GMP Contract Manufacturing Services to the pharmaceutical industry. Galilaeus' strategy is to produce new compounds for drug discovery in order to find novel candidates for cancer chemotherapy. For the clinical phases they are looking for partners in the pharmaceutical industry. The production of generic active pharmaceutical ingredients (API) is also based on use of bacteria in the production process. The strategy is to develop stable and highly efficient production processes for the generic ingredients, which are commercially viable. Among several possible therapeutic areas they currently focus efforts on are in the production of anthracyclines, which are widely used in medical treatment of cancer. Galilaeus aims for a balanced growth through its two-fold strategy of drug development and generic production. The income from the production of generic drug ingredients will allow them to concentrate efficiently on the development of new molecules.
