Biovitrum was established in August 2001, from three of Pharmacia's Swedish research operations, the research group for metabolic diseases, the development unit for biotechnology-based drugs and the plasma operations. In April 2005, Biovitrum completed the acquisition of Cambridge Biotechnology. In August 2005, Biovitrum acquired Arexis, a privately owned Swedish biotech and pharmaceutical company with an extensive portfolio of projects in preclinical and clinical phases, founded in 1999 and located in Gothenburg. Biovitrium is a company which is engaged in the research and develops pharmaceuticals for unmet medical needs both for common diseases and conditions that affect smaller patient populations. Biovitrum's business concept is to develop innovative pharmaceuticals that help improve patients' lives. With many years' experience of pharmaceutical development, a fully-integrated research and development organization, high level of expertise in protein-based pharmaceuticals and a strong financial position, Biovitrum develops drugs both in-house and in collaboration with partners throughout the value chain.
