The Fresenius Group consists of four business segments: Fresenius Medical Care, Fresenius Kabi, Fresenius ProServe and Fresenius Biotech.
Fresenius was originally founded in 1912. The company floated on the stock market in 1986. Fresenius Medical Care AG was set up in 1996, then Fresenius created its subsidiary Fresenius Kabi in 1998, through the merger of the nutrition business of Pharmacia & Upjohn outside Germany with its own Pharma Divison. Fresenius' factory in Friedberg/Hesse has been in operation since 1997, and Fresenius Kabi opened a new production facility for infusion solutions for parenteral nutrition in Uppsala, Sweden in 1999. 1999 also saw the group separate into four legally independent companies: Fresenius Medical Care, Fresenius Kabi, Fresenius ProServe and Fresenius HemoCare. Fresenius Biotech is a company of the Fresenius Health Care Group, focused on the development and marketing of biopharmaceuticals in the fields of oncology, immunology and regenerative medicine. The business activities of Fresenius Biotech are focused on Immunosuppression in organ transplantation, Development of trifunctional antibodies for cancer treatment, Research, development and manufacture of products in the field of somatic gene therapy.
