Biofusion owns the rights to 100% of the university-owned research generated at two of the UK's leading universities – The University of Sheffield and Cardiff University. These exclusive partnerships enable us to invest in some the world's most advanced and exciting science, turning world class research into business through the creation of a growing portfolio of companies, in fields as varied as drug discovery, alternative energy and engineering.
We own the rights to an amazing depth and quality of research and we aim to turn that into real value for our shareholders. Our combination of short, medium and long term investments minimises risk and offers the potential for significant value growth for our shareholders.
As shareholders in Biofusion, our partner universities are rewarded and incentivised to ensure that their R&D spend is focused on generating world class IP and the academics are rewarded with shareholdings in the subsequent portfolio companies.
In 2005, we signed an exclusive 10 year agreement with The University of Sheffield, the UK’s 5th ranked University for the quality of its life science IP, focusing on biosciences and commercialising all of their owned medical IP.
In 2007 we signed a second exclusive 10 year agreement with Cardiff University, the UK’s 5th ranked University for the overall quality of its IP, to commercialise all of their IP.
These partnerships allow everyone to play to their strengths – our partners focus on creation and innovation, and we take care of commercialisation. At the point of cross-over we are well integrated with each university’s existing technology transfer team, ensuring that progress is smooth and seamless.
Biofusion are actively seeking licensees that are interested in acquiring the rights to selected technology opportunities available from Biofusion's university partners or from within Biofusion licensing itself. All the technology opportunities listed on this site are available for licensing and we welcome contact from any organisations interested in discussing the technology further or wishing to develop the opportunities commercially.
Biofusion receives invention disclosures from its university partners and evaluates these disclosures for their commercial possibilities, and when possible licenses them to industry. If we successfully license a technology, the royalties are distributed between Biofusion, the university partner and the academic inventors of the technology.
We typically begin by reviewing an invention with its academic inventor to learn more about the technology, its state of development and what the potential applications or products might be. We then develop a commercial strategy, often considering the opinions of external consultants and industry sector experts. After assessing the technology, we put in place a commercial plan to develop the technology and decide when to protect the intellectual property (if appropriate). We then actively seek feedback on the technology from relevant commercial organisations and use this information to help guide the commercial plan for the technology. By doing this we hope to offer technologies that are relevent to real problems facing a wide range of sectors.
The majority of Biofusion's portfolio opportunities are the subject of patent applications but we also offer opportunities that involve copyright (software), trademark licensing, and Material Transfer Agreements/Licences for biological material sales.
