NIBSC is the global leader in biological standardisation,
developing and producing over 90% of the International
Standards in use around the world to assure the quality of
biological medicines and is the leading World Health
Organisation (WHO) International Laboratory for Biological
Standards.
The Institute is also the UK's Official Medicines Control
Laboratory, responsible for testing biological medicines within
the framework of the European Union.
NIBSC scientists have an international reputation for

Main Activities
Product Testing - employed by national regulatory and
public health authorities to independently assess products
with very low 'risk tolerance' such as prophylactic vaccines,
blood and immunological products to meet agreed quality
specifications.
Standardisation and Assay Development - provides common
measurement standards to ensure batch to batch
consistency of product and to ensure dosing accuracy of
patients. Develops appropriate and improve existing methods
for product testing.
Applied Research- carries out independent and collaborative
research programmes focusing on emerging quality and
safety issues involved in biological medicines. Maintains
international reputation as world leaders in the relevant fields.
Disseminates knowledge gained by peer reviewed
publications and interaction with professional organisations.
Training and Expert Advice- provides independent and
impartial advice to regulators, manufacturers and academic
institutes. Hosts training programmes to disseminate best
practice to safeguard global public health.
